Opinion: BABA Was Here

baba was Here

BABA Was Here.

This cartoon captures, with brutal honesty, the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari as seen through the eyes of many Nigerians.

The image shows a fractured map of Nigeria, inscribed with the words “Baba Was Here,” symbolizing a nation deeply affected, some would say broken, by his leadership.

The line, “I have carved a niche for myself,” hits hard.

Not because it reflects success, but because many feel the niche was carved through silence in the face of terror, leniency toward so-called “repentant terrorists,” and unaddressed insecurity.

Nigerians remember the farmers in Benue, the students kidnapped in the North, and the tragic events at the Lekki Toll Gate.

Yes, history will not forget.

But what it remembers depends on what was done.

And for many, the memory is pain, hardship, and missed opportunities.

This isn’t about celebrating anyone’s fall.

It’s about holding leaders accountable, even after their tenure, so that future generations learn that leadership must mean service, not silence.

Let this image spark reflection, not vengeance.

A nation deserves truth, healing, and progress, not repeated cycles of trauma. Those in power should learn too.

That’s the niche we should all strive to carve.
